Statistical Mechanics of Soft Matter 2020

The Seventh SM2 Meeting will be a virtual event hosted by Griffith University and the University of Queensland on 14-15 December, 2020.

SM2 is a local discussion meeting on all aspects of the equilibrium and nonequilibrium statistics of condensed matter, from fundamentals to applications, relating to liquids, colloids, polymers, gels, biological molecules, liquid crystals and other forms of soft matter. The meeting will consist of a single stream of talks and a poster session.

SM2 will be followed immediately afterwards on 16 December, 2020, by a statistical mechanics summer school.

Registration deadlines: 10 December for participants who wish to give a talk, 13 December for participants who do not wish to give a talk.

Details

This year, the meeting will be held virtually. We will have a number of invited speakers contributing live presentations throughout the two days, but also opportunities to network online with the speakers of contributed talks. These contributed talks will be made available via YouTube for meeting attendees to peruse in the lead-up to the meeting, so that you can use the networking sessions to ask questions, and catch up with colleagues more generally.

To this end, we will offer prizes to the best talks under 10 minutes in the following categories:

  • best student talk under 10 minutes
  • best ECR talk under 10 minutes
  • best talk under 10 minutes (open category)

More details of the program will be made available closer to the time.

Update (29/11/20): List of participants added to the programme page! This list will be updated every few days as people register.

Update (9/12/20): Programme and YouTube video links added to the programme page.

Registration

Registration is free. Please register at the SM2 registration page.

If you have been invited to give a live talk please indicate this on your registration form.

If you would like to give a contributed talk, in the form of a YouTube video, please indicate this on your registration form, and add a link to the YouTube video once it is ready. Your YouTube video will be added to an SM2 Meeting YouTube playlist which will be publicly accessible. For more information on how to upload your video recording to YouTube please see the following advice from Google, or consult your friendly neighbourhood teenager / tech. expert. Do not select the option to indicate that the video is "made for kids". If you choose this option then your video cannot be added to the playlist.

If you wish to be added to our mailing list please send an email to: smsq.meeting@gmail.com.

Note: whether you wish to register for both the conference and the summer school, or only the conference, or only the summer school, it is only necessary to submit the registration form once.

Summer School

The summer school will be held on 16 December, and will consist of lectures on theories and computational methods in statistical mechanics. It is targeted at research students and postdocs, and registration is free. Please register at the SM2 registration page for the summer school by 7 December.
