Statistical Mechanics of Soft Matter 2015

SM2 is a local discussion meeting on the theme of Statistical Mechanics of Soft Matter (SMSM).

The second SM2 workshop will be held at Swinburne University, Hawthorn Campus, Melbourne, from November 30-December 1, 2015.

The aim of this workshop is to discuss fundamentals and applications of equilibrium and non-equilibrium statistical mechanics. We are particularly interested in computational statistical mechanics relating to simple and complex liquids, polymers, biological materials and other forms of soft matter.

The workshop is structured as a series of 20 - 25 minute talks, with ample time for discussion. Students, postdocs and early career researchers are strongly encouraged to participate, even with reports on work that is still in progress at the time of the meeting. AMSI (Australian Mathematical Sciences Institute) has generously agreed to provide travel support for students, postdocs and early career researchers that will be taking part in SM2. See below for more details.

Interested participants should send a title and abstract to Federico Frascoli, ffrascoli@swin.edu.au, by Friday, October 30, 2015.

Keynote speakers

Debra Bernhardt The University of Queensland Nonequilibrium flow in nanopores
Denis Evans Australian National University Dissipation and the Foundations of Classical Statistical Thermodynamics
David Huang The University of Adelaide Surface effects in nanofluidic energy harvesting

We note that Denis Evans was the Craig medallist from AAS for 2015.

The David Craig Medal recognises the outstanding contribution to chemical research of the late Emeritus Professor David Craig, AC, FAA, FRS. Its purpose is to recognise contributions of a high order to any branch of chemistry by active researchers. The awardee is expected to present several public lectures in cities across Australia. The award is made annually and is given to candidates who are normally resident in Australia and for research conducted mainly in Australia.

Accommodation

Melbourne has been named most liveable city in the world for the fifth year in a row. Swinburne campus is located in the suburb of Hawthorn, close to Glenferrie railway station. Glenferrie road is one of the most unique spots in Melbourne, famous for its vibrant atmosphere and for its cafes, eateries and shops.

Quest Hawthorn is conveniently located at walking distance (5 mins) from Swinburne Hawthorn Campus. Quest will offer attendees of SM2 a discounted rate of $194.00 per Studio Apartment per night, including complimentary WiFi. Reservations could be made directly with the hotel via email, questhawthorn@queststudios.com.au, or telephone, (03) 8803 7700. Please specify that you will be attending the SM2 workshop at Swinburne.

There are also a large number of choices of accommodation in the city. Glenferrie station is on the Lilydale/Belgrave/Alamein train line, and just 15 minutes by train from the CBD.

Travel funding

AMSI will generously provide travel funding to cover reimbursements to selected participants to SM2. This funding is aimed at undergraduate, Masters and PhD students, postdocs and early career researchers from AMSI member institutions. Please find all relevant details and conditions on the AMSI travel funding page here.
